The mountain lion, also known as cougar or puma, has always been found in Big Bend country. Generally nocturnal, these prime predators feed on deer and small mammals. A lion’s range is large - often 25 miles around a den - and populations will not exceed 10 animals in 100 square miles. In recent years human/lion encounters have increased as more people frequent the Big Bend country. Lord of all he surveys, the elusive cougar on watch from a stony perch.
