February 2010 Member tours
Friends members enjoyed two different tours in February. One, to Indian Head, was led by Big Bend National Park Archaeologist Tom Alex. Mr. Alex and our members explored the many Native American sites concentrated in this area of the park. The second group toured the Mesa de Anguila, led by Chief of Interpretation and Visitor Services David Elkowitz. This group took a vigorous climb to the top of the Mesa for spectacular views. You can read more about the Mesa hike in our blog “Take a Hike“.

Torch Energy Event:
In October 2009, Houston-area members were treated to an evening at Torch Energy to view J.P. Bryan’s private collection of Texana. This collection is the world’s largest collection, and offered a unique peek into Texas history and culture. Thanks to those who attended to celebrate both the park and our state!
Terlingua Abaja:
Thanks to the members who joined us on a great trip to Terlingua Abaja on Valentine’s Day 2009. Chief of Interpretation and Visitor Services Elkowitz provided an excellent history of the area, and the weather was perfect. Another great day for our members in the park!
A Wild Ride:
Thanks to Far Flung Adventures for organizing an exciting trip through Santa Elena Canyon for our members on October 4th. With the river level so high, it was a whole new adventure for the members who attended the trip!
Dallas Member Event a Success:
Superintendent Bill Wellman and Chief of Interpretation and Visitor Services David Elkowitz joined the Friends of Big Bend National Park board in welcoming over 75 guests at our member event on June 21st. After Bill and David gave the crowd an overview of the park’s activities, and answered all the crowd’s questions, Board President Jack Lamkin announced that earlier in the day FBBNP’s board voted unanimously to fund four projects for the park – a gift of over $30,000. This latest gift pushes FBBNP’s total giving past $730,000. The board looks forward to reaching the $1 million mark soon!
Thanks to Energy Transfer for hosting this fun evening!
License Plate Program Changes
Are you one of the hundreds of Texans with a Friends of Big Bend National Park license plate? If so, you can now renew your plate online, at www.texasonline.com or at your local county offices. While these new changes will make renewing your plates easier than ever, it also means that the state is no longer forwarding the name and address of FBBNP license plate holders to our office.
When you renew, please let us know with a phone call to 432-477-2242 or email [Email address: fbbnp #AT# hotmail.com - replace #AT# with @ ], so that we can keep you on our newsletter and events list. And THANK YOU for helping and promoting Big Bend National Park!
