The Ultra Run is in the books! Our congrats to Big Bend Ultra winner John Yoder, who finished in 3:47.  Congrats also to Tanya Hunter, the women's champion who finished in 4:28.  Full race results and photos are on our Facebook page.  Thanks to all our sponsors and volunteers who made this race happen! $20,000 from Brown Foundation for Orientation Film Campaign Our thanks to the Brown Foundation for their of $20,000 for our Orientation Film Campaign.  This brings us to $96,000 raised for this campaign, over halfway to our goal of $150,000!! Friends of Big Bend National Park Co-Hosted the National Parks Friends Alliance Summit! On October 27-29, the Friends partnered with Los Compadres de San Antonio Missions to host the National Parks Friends Alliance Summit.  This gathering of park fundraising groups from around the country was addressed by Department of the Interior Officials, National Park Service Partnership staff and the new president of National Park Foundation, Neil Mulholland. $30,000 to the park gifted at the September 2009 Board of Directors Meeting! On Friday, September 25th the Friends of Big Bend Board of Directors approved $30,000 in license plate funds for the park at its fall board meeting.  The projects include improvements to Night Sky Lighting in the Chisos Basin and a design charette for the future paleontology exhibit improvements along 385.  Click here for details.  In addition to making grants to the park, the board elected five new members: Craig Chambers of Houston Paula Colman of Houston Richard Sawey of Ft. Worth Tex Toler of Sanderson Annette Kahn Webster of Dallas $30,000 to the park gifted in San Antonio! On Saturday, June 20th the Friends of Big Bend Board of Directors approved $30,000 in license plate funds for the park at its San Antonio board meeting.  The projects include the Teacher Ranger Teacher program, a shaded picnic area at the Fossil Bone Exhibit and digital media equipment for the park's interpretive staff.  Click here for details. That evening, the board welcomed over 50 license plate holders and members at a reception at La Fonda on Main.  Guests were treated to a preview of the upcoming book Texas' Big Bend by author and photographer Mike Marvins.  Following Mr. Marvins, Chief of Interpretation and Visitor Services David Elkowitz and Park Superintendent Bill Wellman briefed guests on the park's flood recovery efforts, how the park is spending its stimulus funds and future park projects that the Friends will be asked to fund.  Thanks to all who made this an excellent evening in celebration of the park!

Three Grants Received totaling $65,000 for Visitor Orientation Film February brought a big boost to the $150,000 Visitor Orientation Film Campaign.  Three pledges, totaling $65,000 put the campaign almost to the halfway point, bringing the total raised to date to $73,000.  The Amon Carter Foundation pledged $50,000, BNSF Foundation joined the campaign with a $10,000 gift and the Union Pacific Foundation made a $5,000 pledge.  All three of these foundations have a history of supporting the Friends and Big Bend National Park.  They have long made the park a priority in their giving, and we thank them for their contributions to this important effort.  This film will have a lasting and visible impact on park visitors and their safety.  Thanks to each foundation for their steadfast support! Grant Received from Permian Basin Area Foundation Friends of Big Bend has received an $8,000 grant from the Permian Basin Area Foundation.  This grant is the first grant in a $150,000 campaign for a Visitor Orientation Film.  This new film will discuss visitor safety, park resources and unique values, park challenges and visitor trip planning.  The film will be used primarily at Panther Junction Visitor Center, which is the park’s main visitor center.  The Friends thanks PBAF for their generosity and looks forward to other gifts from foundations across the state. "Buddy" Davidson Charitable Foundation awards grant to FBBNP Our thanks to the James A. "Buddy" Davidson Charitable Foundation for its $10,000 grant awarded in September for the Rio Grande Village Wetlands Restoration project.  This gift brings us to over $40,000 raised for this habitat restoration project. Funding News for July 2008: Tourism Cares Worldwide Grant Program has joined The Brown Foundation and the Trull Foundation as funders of the Rio Grande Village Wetlands Restoration project with a $10,000 gift.  FBBNP was one of only six organizations worldwide to be selected for the Summer 2008 grant period, and the only project selected in Texas!  To learn more about the Tourism Cares grant program, visit their website at www.tourismcares.org. Funding News for June 2008: The Trull Foundation has joined the Brown Foundation in awarding the Friends a grant for the Rio Grande Village Wetlands Restoration project.  This $6500 grant will go toward rehabilitating the area to it’s pre-agricultural state, providing birds with nesting habitat and a buffer zone for the federally endangered mosquitofish.  Our thanks to the Trull Foundation for their support of this project! Funding News for March 2008: Friends of Big Bend National Park is pleased to announce a grant of $15,000 from the Brown Foundation for habitat restoration efforts at the Rio Grande Valley wetlands area.  This project aims to restore the area to its natural habitat, providing migrating birds with a welcoming environment and a buffer zone for the nearby federally endangered mosquitofish.  In 2007, FBBNP's Board of Directors allotted $12,000 in license plate revenue to start this project, which park personnel estimate will cost $85,000.
